Ulysse Nardin is well known for its research and development of silicium components, and has expanded its selection of models with that technology this year. As part of its ongoing consolidation and endeavor to use in-house movements in all of its watches (the goal is 95% manufacture calibers in its line by 2017), Ulysse Nardin reintroduced its iconic Dual Timer model with an in-house caliber this year. The Dual Time Manufacture, which enables the second time zone and date to be adjusted both forward and backward, is now equipped with Caliber UN-334, with a silicon escapement. The brand had developed the module on the previous caliber, an ETA base, used for this watch. The Marine Diver, one of the brand’s most iconic timepieces, is water resistant to 200 meters and features a rubber strap, small seconds subdial and a power reserve — crucial for divers.

The brand’s iconic showpiece, the Freak Cruiser, contains one of the brand’s specialty movements. It is a carrousel tourbillon, which differs from a conventional tourbillon in that it revolves around the perimeter of the tourbillon cage, rather than on its axis, as the cage itself rotates. It contains the manual-wound Caliber UN-205, with a seven-day power reserve. The case is 18k gold.

Ulysse Nardin, based in Le Locle, Switzerland, was founded in 1846. Along with a handful of other elite brands, it helped to form the foundations of Swiss watchmaking in that district. Since then, the company has contributed many innovations to the watchmaking field.
