A Guide to Stacking Rings

Layering necklaces and bracelets have become quite the norm. Yet, the next jewelry stacking trend can be trickier to execute and harder to pull off. Wear too few rings and the look loses its punch; wear too many and each ring’s unique qualities could get lost.

Ring stacking is a surefire way to grab attention, and also a great way to highlight the hand and fingers. It’s also a fun way to maximize your ring collection and explore your signature jewelry style.

The good news is that there are many ways to stack your rings, and there are no hard and fast rules to follow. Have fun exploring these techniques, and find out which one works for you!

Mix and match

Mix metals like white, yellow, or rose gold as an alternative to the traditional, monochromatic look. The key to successfully mixing metals is to disperse them evenly across your fingers, and to have that one statement piece that ties them all together.

Aside from mixing metals, you can also mix finishes by wearing smooth bands with textured options. For example, polished bands, hammered rings, beaded rings, and gemstone rings can all work in harmony to create the perfect ring stack.

Stacking Rings

Make a statement

Our bold piece will serve as the focal point of the stack. You can use a chunky ring or a gemstone ring as your statement ring, then build your stack around it. Just remember not to stack too much to the point that it takes the focus away from your statement ring. If you feel it’s too much, you can tone it down by choosing fewer rings and placing a midi ring for a little edge.

Think about placement

Keep your rings proportional when placed beside each other through proper placement. An easy way to do this is to wear rings of the same width in a straight line in your index, middle, and ring fingers.

Another trick you can try is the triangle placement where you wear rings on the same line on both your index and ring fingers. You can place a midi ring on the first knuckle of your middle finger to form the top of the triangle shape.

Leave a finger bare

Putting rings on all fingers may seem over the top, especially if you’re using intricately designed rings. To achieve a balanced composition, leave one finger free of jewelry (preferably your pinky or thumb).

Stick to one style

Stick to one ring style for a more intentional, balanced, and cohesive look. For example, dainty, thin rings look great on the fingers, as well as chunky rings. But if you’re going to wear a dainty ring on one finger and then a chunky piece on the other, it may be challenging to pull off a cohesive look.

Less is more

A ring stack doesn’t necessarily mean wearing plenty of rings. A subtle layer of two to three pieces can result in an elegant look. If you have an understated sense of style, a ring stack made of delicate and dainty bands will definitely work.

But we all know that minimalism doesn’t work for everyone. If you prefer a maximalist ring stack, feel free to combine gorgeously ornate and chunkier rings with your dainty bands. It may take some tweaking to find the perfect combination, but feel free to combine various textures and colors to express your own unique style.

Stacking Rings

Add a pop of color

Create a colorful stack by experimenting with different colored gemstones and ring designs.

You can incorporate just one gemstone ring in your stack, or go all out and wear a variety of gemstone rings in multiple fingers. Whichever styling option you choose, know that gemstones can elevate your look without much effort on your part.

Dial down on other jewelry

For maximum impact, don’t wear bracelets that could easily distract from your ring stack. Instead, wear a necklace or a pair of earrings to showcase your ring layering skills.

Keep nails subtle

Keep your nails neat and your polish chip-free. Your nails serve as a canvas for the ring stack.

If they are dirty or chipped, they can take away the beauty of your stack, no matter how beautiful the rings are.

Don’t forget the other hand

If this is your first time stacking, it’s easy to ignore the other hand. Place rings on your other hand as well to create the perfect balance.
