When to Wear: Should You Remove Jewelry for Sleeping, Showering, and Exercising?

When it comes to jewelry, there’s a certain magic in finding that perfect piece that feels like an extension of yourself. You’ll want to wear it everyday and never want to take it off. Whether it’s a sentimental pearl diamond necklace or a diamond link bangle, it’s natural to want to keep it close like a constant companion. But is it a good idea to wear it all the time, or is it better if you give your jewelry a break? Let’s discuss.

Sleeping

We’ve all been guilty of this – at the end of a long, tiring day, removing every piece of jewelry on your body seems like a chore. But we shouldn’t make a habit out of it! You might end up waking to a tangled mess, especially if you’re into layering your jewelry pieces. Your necklaces may get tangled up while you toss and turn, and your earrings could poke into your skin.

And if you’re wearing fine jewelry, you should definitely be extra cautious and remove your pieces before going to bed. Metals with nickel can cause skin irritation, especially when in prolonged contact with your skin. You might also end up losing a cherished piece while you sleep. Your scattered diamond ring or pave brown diamond bangle could easily slip off your finger or wrist, while your dainty pear star huggie earring could fall off, leaving you with an incomplete pair in the morning.

Showering

Stepping into the shower after a long day might seem like the ultimate evening ritual, but this could actually damage your beloved pieces. As you lather up with soap or slather on lotion, your jewelry could inadvertently become collateral damage.

While diamonds are known for their durability, they aren’t immune to the effects of a sudsy soak. Constant exposure to soaps and shampoos can leave a filmy residue on your pave bezel diamond ring or any other diamond jewelry, dulling their once-dazzling brilliance.

Gold jewelry, while resilient to water, isn’t entirely shower-safe either. Sure, the metal itself won’t suffer any harm, but the constant exposure to water and cleansing products will also diminish its shine over time.

As for gold-plated jewelry, these pieces definitely don’t belong in the shower. The thin gold layer can strip off and expose the sterling silver or nickel layers, leaving your jewelry looking lackluster and prone to tarnishing.

Exercising

For those times when you just have to have a little sparkle while working out, minimal jewelry is fine, but skip the statement pieces. They may be eye-catching, but they’re also prone to getting tangled or caught up in the midst of your sweat session. Stick to comfortable and lightweight pieces such as a pair of diamond studs or a simple bangle, as they won’t interfere with your exercise routine.

When in doubt, it is best to prioritize your comfort without sacrificing your personal style. Protect yourself – and your jewelry in the process – when doing any of these activities so you get to extend the life of your pieces.
